Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic prescription medicine that temporarily improves the look of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines between your eyebrows.

When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold without you even noticing. The same thing happens when you squint — the muscles around your eyes contract, causing crow’s feet to appear.

Botox relaxes the facial muscles responsible for these creases and wrinkles. If your muscles are relaxed, they don’t contract and wrinkles don’t appear.

What happens during a Botox treatment?

First, Dr. Modlin performs a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment plan, specific to your goals. During the actual treatment, Dr. Modlin uses a small needle to inject the Botox into the specific, predetermined facial muscles. Patients report that the injections feel similar to a pinch.

Botox is often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure” because it requires minimal downtime and takes only a few minutes, so you can do it on your lunch break. You can return to your daily routine as soon as the procedure is over.

When can you expect to see results from Botox?

You’ll begin to notice results 24-48 hours after the procedure, but it can take 3-14 days to see the full effects of the treatment. Temporary bruising and a little pain at the injection site are common. You may experience a headache, but that’s rare.

The effects of Botox typically last 4-6 months. Your wrinkles will start to reappear as muscle action is gradually restored. The more injections you receive over time, the more your muscles are trained to relax.

Is Botox right for you?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, suffer from a neurological disorder, or are allergic to albumin, you should not receive Botox treatment.

Botox only works to prevent muscles from continuing to form wrinkles. The treatment does not help to fill in wrinkles that are already present. Wrinkles caused by sun damage or by gravity don’t respond to Botox.
