Fillers or Botox: Which Option is Best For You

The good news is that you’re living in a time when effective and safe anti-aging treatments abound. The bad news is that it’s sometimes confusing to determine which treatments are the ones you need right now.

You’ve heard about Botox since your face was smooth and unlined. Now that you’re older and actually have wrinkles, you’re wondering if Botox is the best way to make them go away. However, you’ve also heard about the benefits of injectable hyaluronic-based dermal fillers, such as the Juvéderm collection, for filling in wrinkles and other areas of lost volume.

Dr. Saul M. Modlin encourages you to learn about all the new, FDA-approved anti-aging treatments available to you. When you come to his Garden City, New York office, he custom designs therapies based on your individual needs. Here he gives a run-down of what kind of wrinkles and signs of aging respond best to Botox and which need the Juvéderm collection.

Lines on your forehead

If you have forehead furrows, deep creases between your eyebrows, or “bunny lines” at the top of your nose, they’re caused by dynamic muscles that continually press on your skin when you make expressions. Botox is a neuromodulator that blocks your muscles from over-expressing and creating wrinkles. About two weeks after your treatment, your forehead is smoother and free from most wrinkles.

Dr. Modlin uses just enough Botox to quiet down your muscles, while still allowing your face a normal range of expressions. Deep furrows or “11s” (frown lines) may also require plumping with a thin dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid (HA), such as Juvéderm XC or Juvéderm Volbella®.

Crow’s feet

Squinting may protect your eyes from sunlight, but it can also cause the wrinkles at the sides of your eyes most commonly referred to as crow’s feet. Laughing and grimacing also contribute to crow’s feet.

Botox is the remedy of choice to smooth out crow’s feet. Within days to two weeks, your wrinkles are gone, making your eyes look brighter and more alert.

Lines under your eyes

Unlike crow’s feet, the wrinkles under your eyes aren’t produced by dynamic muscles. Dr. Modlin plumps up these tiny lines with a thin filler, such as Volbella. He may also recommend filling hollow tear troughs with Juvéderm to create a more youthful contour and smooth out wrinkled skin.

Wrinkles around your lips

The tiny lines around your lips aren’t just aging, they can cause your carefully applied lipstick to bleed. Depending on the depth of your perioral wrinkles, Dr. Modlin may fill them with Juvederm. He might also add just a touch of Botox so that you don’t over-purse your lips while drinking through a straw or whistling.

Wrinkles around your lips are sometimes referred to as “smoker’s lines.” Dr. Modlin strongly encourages you to quit smoking to improve your overall skin quality and your health.

Deep creases around your mouth and nose

The expressive lines that run from the corners of your nose to your mouth (nasolabial folds), from your lips to your chin (marionette lines), and at the sides of your lips (parentheses) can turn your bright and happy expression sour. Dr. Modlin uses soft, flexible Juvéderm products such as Juvéderm Vollure to fill in the folds and take years off your appearance.

Gauntness and volume loss

If a recent weight loss or aging have depleted your midface and cheeks of youthful volume, Dr. Modlin uses Juvéderm VolumaJ® create a more uplifted and fuller look. He can also use Voluma to build up your cheekbones and create a subtle nonsurgical facelift.

Thin lips

You may not notice while it’s happening, but if you compare a photograph of yourself 10 years ago to a selfie you take today, you’ll probably see that your lips are thinner than they used to be. If there’s one anti-aging treatment that can make an immediate difference in how youthful you look, it’s a simple nonsurgical lip augmentation with Juvéderm or Volbella. Dr. Modlin can also make your lips look more symmetrical and reshape them to match your aesthetic ideals.

Liquid facelift

Depending on your needs, you may not have to choose between Botox and Juvederm, or decide which type of Juvéderm is best for you. Dr. Modlin custom designs a liquid facelift that addresses all of your aging concerns without a single incision or stitch.

Liquid facelifts need to be re-touched as the fillers and Botox wear off. Botox usually lasts about three to four months. Juvéderm fillers last from six months to more than a year.
